Jessica Roemischer will begin by playing original piano interpretations of music, ancient to contemporary. These pieces will be used to illustrate why music is, indeed, a universal language. Jessica will then share her innovative approach to piano improvisation. Together with volunteers from the audience, she will generate spontaneous, improvised duets that are certain to reveal deeper truths about our essential human nature!

Morning Session - To begin this dynamic interactive workshop, Jessica Roemischer will ask participants: “What song or piece of music do you hold most dear?” Based on the responses, Jessica will create and perform a series of unique piano medleys. This musical landscape will provide an evocative experience from which to then consider: “What does our favorite music reveal about us?” Indeed, music is possibly the most potent means for connecting to the essence of who we are—it can bring to the surface personal memory and our collective/cultural legacies. The morning session will culminate in our asking: “Can music help us create a more unified experience of ourselves and the world?” Can it lead to true integration–of mind, body, spirit and heart? The afternoon session will provide a first-hand experiential answer to that question!
Afternoon Session - The afternoon will begin with a short video entitled, “Flying Free: Music without Limits,” which documents Jessica’s pioneering work at Riverbrook Residence, New England’s oldest facility for women with developmental disabilities. This cutting-edge music program—which received support from the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Caroline and James Taylor—is revealing extraordinary insights into the power of music to facilitate transformation. Jessica’s program is based on the assumption that the ability to express beauty is inherent to us all by virtue of being human. Drawing from her dual background in music and personal and cultural change, Jessica will demonstrate at the piano her methodology and the aesthetic principles she employs with all her students—principles that will be of value to everyone, regardless of musical background. She will then improvise with members of the audience (no qualification needed!). This will allow participants to experience firsthand the catalytic power of music, and its potential to activate an inner source of knowing, autonomy and strength.
